Who is Piso Thrania ...

Initiative for Education without Discrimination!

Who is Piso Thrania*

Piso Thrania was established in the autumn of 1999 as part of the Network for Social Support to Refugees and Migrantsas an initiative of practical solidarity with economic and political immigrants and refugees.

The group primarily aims to provide free adult Greek language courses to immigrants and refugees. It also informs and assists families in educational matters such as children’s enrollment and attendance in Greek public schools and finally, it focuses on the establishment of practical solidarity, both between Greeks and people from various countries of origin as well as between individuals from different origin.

The educational purpose of Piso Thrania is, on one hand, to teach and thus provide knowledge of a basic Greek vocabulary which is a very important factor for fundamental integration in Greek society. On the other hand, the teaching of the necessary grammatical and syntactic rules gives students understanding of the correct use of Greek language both written and oral.

At the same time, as Piso Thraniawe take part in broader movement campaigning, such as the Antiracist Festival organized by the Coordinating Committee of Immigration and Antiracist Organizations, demonstrating, participating in rallies and mobilizations against any racist and anti-immigration policy.

We all claim a world that can fit many worlds!

*“Piso Thrania” literally means the “back school benches”. In the context of a school classroom the piso thrania were traditionally occupied by the weak or less privileged students as it is easier to hide in the back.
